ITU-led summit outlines measures to protect global submarine cables

Leaders and experts say stronger international cooperation is needed to support the world's digital infrastructure.

An international summit of leaders from government, industry and international organizations agreed on a series of steps to better protect, maintain and improve the "resilience" of a vast network of submarine telecommunications cables that carry virtually all the world's data traffic.

The International Submarine Cable Resilience Summit hosted for two days in Abuja, Nigeria concluded with a declaration on Thursday by the U.N.-led International Advisory Body on Submarine Cable Resilience calling for more international cooperation and technical advancements.
